Quick answer: restart your router and device, test the speed on the TV device itself, and move to ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi if it’s low. Then clear the app cache and try switching between hardware and software decoding. If only certain channels buffer, contact your provider.
Why IPTV buffers
Buffering happens when video arrives more slowly than it plays. With live TV there’s very little preloaded video to fall back on, so even a short dip in your connection shows up as a spinning wheel or a frozen picture. The cause is nearly always one of four things:
- Your home network: weak Wi-Fi, a struggling router or too many devices at once.
- Your device: low memory, a full cache or old software.
- Your player settings: the wrong decoder or quality for your connection.
- The stream itself: a problem on the provider’s side.
Work through the fixes below in order. They’re arranged from quickest to most involved.
1. Restart everything
Turn off your router and TV device at the plug, wait 30 seconds, then switch the router back on first. Once its lights settle, turn the TV device back on. It sounds basic, but it clears memory leaks and stale network connections that build up over days.
2. Check the speed where you watch
Run a speed test on the TV device itself at the time the buffering happens. You need roughly 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K per stream. If you’re well below that, the fix is your network, not the app. Our IPTV speed guide explains the figures and how to test properly.
3. Improve the connection
- Use ethernet wherever you can. It’s the most effective single fix for buffering.
- Switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi if the device is near the router, or 2.4 GHz if it’s further away and the 5 GHz signal is weak.
- Pause heavy usage such as game downloads, cloud backups and large uploads while you watch.
- Consider a mesh system or powerline adapters if your TV is far from the router.
4. Clear the app cache and free up storage
Player apps store channel logos, programme guide data and thumbnails. Over time this fills the device’s limited storage and slows everything down.
- Firestick: Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > your player > Clear cache.
- Android TV / Google TV: Settings > Apps > your player > Clear cache.
- Smart TVs: uninstall and reinstall the player if there’s no cache option.
Uninstall apps you don’t use. Streaming sticks with less than about 500 MB free space often struggle.
5. Adjust your player settings
- Decoder: most players let you choose hardware or software decoding. Hardware is usually smoother; if you get stuttering or a black screen, try the other option.
- Buffer size: some players let you increase the buffer. A larger buffer adds a few seconds’ delay but absorbs short drops.
- Quality: if a channel offers several versions, choose HD rather than 4K on slower connections.
- Update the app to the latest version.
6. Update or upgrade your device
Install any system updates for your TV or streaming stick. If you’re using an older Fire TV Stick Lite or a budget Android box, moving to a Fire TV Stick 4K Max, an Nvidia Shield or a recent Google TV device can make a real difference, especially with 4K and large channel lists.
7. Narrow down whether it’s the stream
Try a few different channels and some on-demand content. If everything buffers, the cause is almost certainly your network or device. If only one or two channels buffer while others play perfectly, the issue is likely on the provider’s side.
8. Contact support with the details
If you’ve worked through the steps above, contact your provider’s support team. Including the following saves a lot of back-and-forth:
- Your device and the app you’re using
- The channels affected and when it happened
- Your speed-test result on the TV device
- Whether you’re on Wi-Fi or ethernet

Frequently asked questions
Why does IPTV buffer only in the evening?
Evenings are when local broadband networks are busiest, and when more people in your home are online. A wired connection and pausing other heavy usage usually help.
Will a faster broadband package stop buffering?
Only if your speed at the TV is genuinely too low. Most buffering is caused by Wi-Fi or the device, so fix those first.
Why does IPTV freeze but Netflix works fine?
On-demand apps download several minutes ahead, which hides short connection drops. Live TV can only buffer a few seconds, so the same drop becomes visible.
